Mountings

MT-297/GR Mounting

Mounting for vehicular sets - containing the connectors for the various parts. Apart from being a mechanical fixture with it's own shock mounts, it supplies power to all parts mounted on it, interconnects those parts and allows the Interphone system to be hooked up. This could be considered the most versatile mounting within the Old Family.

There are four mounting positions on top - not all are used in some configurations. From left to right:
Auxiliary receiver, either R-108/GRC, R-109/GRC or R-110/GRC.
Receiver Transmitter, either RT-66/GRC, RT-67/GRC or RT-68/GRC.
Power Supply, either PP-112/GRC or PP-109/GRC.
Amplifier AM-65/GRC (in some configurations carrying Receiver Transmitter RT-70/GRC on top).

Running from the sides, there are seven short cables with connectors, to hook up the parts in use. From left to right:
W-1: Power In - Receiver R-108/GRC, R-109/GRC or R-110/GRC.
W-2: Receiver Control - Receiver R-108/GRC, R-109/GRC or R-110/GRC.
W-3: Receiver Transmitter Control - Receiver Transmitter RT-66/GRC, RT-67/GRC or RT-68/GRC.
W-5: Power In - Power Supply PP-112/GRC or PP-109/GRC.
W-4: Power In - Amplifier AM-65/GRC (also for Receiver Transmitter RT-70/GRC).
W-7: Intercom - Amplifier AM-65/GRC.
W-6: Receiver Transmitter Control - Receiver Transmitter RT-70/GRC (through Amplifier AM-65/GRC).
Unused cables must be screwed tight unto blind holding posts provided on the front to maintain water tightness.

The mounting also has the capability to interconnect up to two series of daisy chained C-375/VRC Control Boxes for Interphone and Radio for individual crew members by means of cable WM-46/U to C-375/VRC Control Box. For more information, look up WM-46/U.
A slot underneath allows either a C-434/GRC Local Control Box or C-435/GRC Retransmission Box to be inserted and locked into place mechanically - there is a round connector provided, with a screw on lid to keep it closed when not in use.

WM-46/U Special Purpose Cable

The Interphone System Cable, a heavy and specialized cable with ten leads of which five are shielded. This is the cable used to hook up the C-375/VRC Control Boxes to whatever mounting is used in the system. And, unlike later radios, where the cables come fitted with connectors and just can be hooked up, this one has to be soldered in.

It's over 1,3 kilogram's per meter, is not easy to bend and must be soldered by hand.

It's not the easiest of cables to find when fitting one of the Old Family Radio Sets - but it seems to have had other uses, so some years back I was able to order two fairly long rolls - with fitted connecters - from Fair Radio Sales. Searching the Internet also gave me two other designations that seem to lead to suppliers - have not tried them yet - using the nomenclature "MIL-C-2486C" and "MIL-C-1486".

Originally, a short length of WM-47/U would be packed with each individual set, as well as a first Control Box.

W-142 cable

A cable I've never seen yet, but it must be a rather simple single lead insulated wire. It's used to connect the Antenna Connector on the Auxiliary Receiver R-108/GRC, R-109/GRC, R-110/GRC  to the Antenna Post on Transmitter Receiver RT-66/GRC, RT-67/GRC, RT-68/GRC. When rebuilding a complete set, any old bit of wire will do in my opinion.

Spare Parts Box. Metal box with felt lined interior - often this lining has become hardened and sticky with age.

It's contents can vary, according to the set it was used with. The spares actually were delivered with each apparatus - I've tried to mention those with the different units that came with spares. The manuals state that in some cases - most cases, in my opinion - CY-684/GR would be too small to hold all spares supplied. The manual for each set suggests what spares to actually keep in the Spare Parts Box - I will try to document that list for those sets that I actually have the manual for, so you can check whether your particular box is filled accordingly.
