Radio Sets - index & lists
On this page I've summarized all radio sets known to me, from the "old
family" style, using components like the RT-66/GRC, RT-67/GRC, RT-68/GRC
and RT-70/GRC. In some cases I had the manual to compile the lists from, in other
cases I worked from the diagrams showing all sets found in a lot of manuals from
that era. Actually, later manuals show even more sets then the early series -
the VRC-20, VRC-21 and VRC-22 only get mentioned in the more recent
documentation as I only realised recently, as they are only a somewhat stripped
version of the original GRC-3, GRC-5 and GRC-7, without the RT-70/GRC. Also,
these do not show the GRA-6 Remote Control Group to be part of the installation,
but on the other hand, they do mention the Installation Kit with each and every
set, unlike before. They have
been added now...
What's more, on a second page - with many links to this one and vice versa - I
am documenting all those parts. So follow the links if you want to know more
about what these sets encompassed and how they were put together.
Throughout the whole page I've dropped the leading "AN/" from the nomenclature, in order
to keep it readable. However, the official name for the first set would be:
AN/GRC-3. This holds true for nearly all major parts in this radio family. Also,
I've tried to use the language of the period these radios belong to. So you will
find Interphone, rather then Intercom.
Armoured, Artillery and Infantry used radio sets that differed only in their
frequencies:
Armoured 20 to 28 MHz
Artillery
27 to 39 MHz
Infantry 38 to 55 MHz.
Note the overlaps, allowing the different
systems to intercommunicate. However, if infantry wanted to talk to armoured
using these band plans,
they had a problem...
Technically this usage of different bands was solved by designing three
variations of the two major components, the Main Receiver Transmitter and the
Auxiliary Receiver. The VRC-8 and the VRC-9 for instance are identical, but for
the Main Receiver Transmitter.
If you compare the GRC-3 with the GRC-4 - both Armoured, so utilizing the same
major components - it turns out the only difference is that the latter does not
have a Auxiliary Receiver. All other components are the same, including to the
mounting.
Basically, with this approach there was a great number of sets - but a limited
number of parts.
The RT-70/GRC by the way is a much smaller transceiver, included in a number of
these sets, solving the communications problems of Armoured and Infantry - it
was specifically meant to work within the Infantry Band.
Portable sets like PRC-6 will be added at a later time.
All markings in red are reminders to myself!

Modification Set
Comments: Most MX sets are meant to complete some radio set when
building it into a particular vehicle. This one is different: it's meant to add
to a built-in set in order to allow field use - outside of the vehicle.
Hand-driven generator, battery box for receiving purposes without some private
sitting en exercising on the generator, carrying bags, an antenna mount that
will fit a small hole on the radio in order to set up an antenna without much
trouble. I'd love to find a complete one: them battery boxes and carrying bags
seem to be scarce.

Units like Receiver Transmitters, Amplifiers, Receivers and Power Supplies
came with their own set of spare parts like tubes, fuses, dial lamps and
vibrators. These lists can be found with the description of those units, just
follow the links. However, in most cases there would be more spare parts then
could be carried in the Spare Parts Case and the manual would suggest what spare
parts to keep in that case as running spares.
